Nikiray Colon, LMSW
Nikiray grew up in New York City and earned his undergraduate degree in Psychology from CUNY Lehman College. During his time in undergrad, Nikiray traveled to several countries including Honduras, Italy, and the Dominican Republic as part of the Spring Alternative Trip program. He helped build schools and libraries for children who lived in orphanages. He then obtained his Masters degree in Social Work from Simmons University. Nikiray since graduation has been utilizing a strength based approach.
Nikiray has provided Therapy for families within the foster care system in hopes of resolving underlying issues for future reunification. Nikiray is conversational in Spanish although primarily services those who are English speaking. Nikiray strives to create a non-judgmental space where everyone can feel comfortable getting care. He works with various clients regardless of skin color, culture, religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity. He is a proud member of the LGBTQUIA community. Nikiray offers an empathic ear and unconditional positive regard. He utilizes several therapeutic modalities such as motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy which allows Nikiray to empower his clients and guide them as they make positive changes towards their life goals.
Nikiray growing up in NYC always had a few pets at home and therefore, understands that pets often offer us the emotional support that we cannot find in others. His experience with having a home full of pets has influenced him to enrich his skills by studying Animal-Assisted Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.Nikiray is a strong believer in self-care and is open to exploring a variety of self-care options with his clients as he understands that we cannot take care of others if we can’t take care of ourselves. His favorite self-care activities include working out, using face masks, going on long walks with his two Labrador retrievers and taking on new DIY home improvement projects.
