Group Therapy: Why You Should Give It a Shot
By Rachel Parodneck, LMSW
“People need people – for initial and continued survival, for socialization, for the pursuit of satisfaction. No one – not the dying, not the outcast, not the mighty – transcends the need for human contact.”
― Irvin D. Yalom, The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy
Group therapy benefits not only the individual, but also benefits the collective group as a whole, often with more therapeutic gains than may be possible in individual psychotherapy alone. Group therapy has been used as a helpful practice in many different settings: hospitals, treatment programs, employee assistance programs, and now you can join a group in a private practice setting at Refresh!
Why sign up for group therapy? There are a plethora of different issues people are struggling with right now. Between skyrocketing COVID-19 cases, historically high unemployment rates, rampant racism, and utter chaos in the capitol, the pandemic has created a greater need than ever before for social connections.
Many people are stuck in small NYC apartments right now with little to no communication with the outside world (unless you count that text from your delivery guy telling you your food has arrived). What better way to connect than in a group targeted for your specific issue led by an experienced clinician? You’ll be in good company.
We recently announced the formation of two groups at Refresh which both begin in February: The first up is “Queer and Questioning Virtual Art Therapy Group” with our very own Kelda E. Nelson, MPS.LCAT, ATR.BC. There was such a need for this that the group was filled almost immediately.
The second group is called “Breathe” and is a support group for Black Single Mothers on the Career Track in NYC. This group was created by Patricia Valencia, a black woman, a single mom of 1, licensed mental health counselor, and the COO of Refresh. This weekly support group will begin Saturday February 6th, 2021. If you or anyone you know is interested, email Patricia@refreshtherapynyc.com to sign up!
Although these groups might not be relevant to you or those you know, stay tuned because there are more yet to come.
